Putrajaya
, the new seat of the Malaysian government is located some 22 miles south of
Kuala Lumpur and is one of the two intelligent cities of the
MSC
. The other intelligent city being
Cyberjaya
. At present, Putrajaya is estimated to cost at US8.1 billion. It is a 37,000
acres which is about 3/4 of the size of Manhattan, USA. As is Cyberjaya, it
aims to adopt an eco-culture environment to be a Garden-City metropolis. The
name Putrajaya is derived from the name of Malaysia's first Prime Minister,
YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj
and the word
'jaya'
in the Malay language means,
'success'
.
Besides serving as the principal seat of the Malaysian government where 76,000
staff will occupy 16mp sq ft of floor space and ultimately 135,000 people will
be working in the new offices of Putrajaya.
Prime Minister's office and residence
At the center of the Putrajaya lies Mahathir's palatial office, a green domed
six-storey granite edifice the size of several city blocks looming over
manicured hills with green glass windows and surrounded by artifical mangrove
lakes filled with bulrushes. The office is lined with wood-panelled interiors,
with its marble-walled foyers and high tech conference rooms. Mahathir's
palatial residence, just five minutes' drive away, is also topped by a green
dome and built at a cost of RM 17.5mn (US$4.6 million). Additionally, adjoining
facilities cost another RM 57.5mn (US$15.1mn), including state rooms, a banquet
hall, meeting and guest rooms. The entire complex - perched atop a hill
overlooking the lake - covers about 40 acres (16 hectares).
